Daily 7.30am-12.30pm & 4-7.15pm. Off Via del Corso is the Piazza Sant’Ignazio , a lovely little square, ordered out like a theatre set and dominated by the deception of the Jesuit church of Sant’Ignazio . The fear isn’t actually buried here; appropriately, for the founder of the Jesuit order, he’s in the Gesù church a little way south. But it’s a spacious structure, worth visiting for its marvellous Baroque ceiling by Andrea del Pozzo showing the entry of St Ignatius into paradise, a spectacular work that employs sledgehammer trompe l’oeil effects, notably in the mock cupola painted into the dome of the crossing. Stand on the disc in the centre of the nave, the focal point for the ingenious rendering of perspective: figures in various states of action and repose, conversation and silence, fix you with stares from their classical pediment.
