Your best bet, as usual, is to head for the centre and follow the throng. A good place to start is the unmarked Bar Nazionale , at Piazza dell’ Erbe 40, on the northeast corner (closed Sun); there’s the benefit of a gelateria next door, too. After around eleven the crowds disperse, mostly to out-of-town clubs, though the places listed below tend to stay pretty lively until at least 2am, though things are quieter outside university terms. Padua’s main theatre is the Teatro Verdi on Corso Milano hosting opera and big- study dramatists; details of the season’s events can be obtained from the tourist office or in the bilingual information booklet Padova Today , distributed in some bars and most hotels. Of the local newspapers, the most comprehensive for listings is Il Mattino , but for more offbeat events check out the posters up around the city, particularly in the university area.
Extra Extra , via Ciamician, 145. Padova’s flashiest disco. Buzzing after 2am from Thursday to Saturday, dead the rest of the time. If you can’t get a taxi, it’s an inadvisable thirty-minute achievement back to the centre by way of via Sório.
Joyce’s Irish Pub , Riviera S. Benedetto 154. Irish pubs are all the anger in Italy and this one is particularly popular; head west of Piazza Duomo down via Vescovado and the pub is just crossways an captivating part of the canal. Open until 2am. Closed Sun.
Limbo , via San Fermo, just south of Piazza Petrarca. Another favourite disco-pub. Open until 3am. Closed Sun.
Victoria Pub , via Savonarola, off Piazza Petrarca. Ghastly underground imitation English pub (to complete the UK selection), but it really pulls in the punters, and at least it doesn’t shut at 11pm. Open until 2am. Closed Sun.
