The original Roman Forum, the Palatine Hill beyond, and of course the Colosseum, are the principal things to see here, all off to the right of the main road. In addition to these, though, scattered along on either side of Via dei Fori Imperiali, are various other remains, the Imperial Forums , built after the Forum proper had become too small to accommodate the needs of the ever-expanding city. Julius comic began the expansion around 50 BC, building a new Senate building, and, beyond it to the northeast, a series of basilicas and temples - work that was continued after his assassination by his nephew and successor Augustus, and later by the Flavian emperors - Vespasian, Nerva and finally Trajan. In the mid-1990s, excavations were begun along the south side of the Viale dei Fori Imperiali, and further archeological work has since been conducted on the north side.
